FDA Update: Mammography Procedure Numbers

Mammograms per year in the nation numbered more than 39.5 million as of Aug. 1, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports.

The statistics come from the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. FDA inspections and certifications of mammogram facilities are made in accordance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act.

Congress passed the 1992 law to make sure women in the U.S. have access to mammograms and can be seen in a timely manner so that breast cancer can be diagnosed in its earliest stages, according to the FDA.
